Jeff Gambin gave up his Mercedes and business, devoting his life
to street people
"Want some spicy prawns with your salmon?" asks Jeff
Gambin, ladling a plate load. He hands dinner to the 35-year-old-man,
who tucks into it with relish. Jeff, 54, has been doling out tasty
treats on Sydney streets for the past 10 years through his charity
Just Enough Faith.
He and wife Alina feed, clothe and house the needy 16 hours a day,
seven days a week.
"I love it", he shrugs. "Who else gets to have a
dinner party with friends every night? We feed people from age three
to 90, including professors, doctors, lawyers... We have some very
lively discussions!"
The former businessman and restaurateur cooks the food, ensuring
it's tasty and nourishing. He's inspired many, from famous footballers
to author Bryce Courtenay, to help out at his food van near the
city's St Mary's Cathedral.
Jeff vividly recalls the winter night when he met a homeless man
who turned his life around. He was sitting on a city bench, reflecting
on business, when the shivering man approached. Pointing to a doorway
he said, "Mate, you're better off over there, it's warmer."
When Jeff said he had a home, the man laughed, "They all say
that."
Later, the man returned and silently handed over his only possession,
a blanket. "It was the only thing he had and he gave it to
me," Jeff says softly. "I said, 'What about you?' He said
'I've been here so long, it doesn't matter'"
A week later Jeff searched in his Mercedes to find the man and
get him somewhere to live. Jeff's been helping people ever since.
The Mercedes and other luxuries have long gone and Jeff's poured
$4.5 million into caring for Sydney's needy. "I'll still give
what I can," he says, "although it's starting to hurt."
